Since my Waldorf storytelling experience, I have used storytelling whenever possible in my own classroom - most frequently in mathematics. This year, in Pre-Kindergarten, I have focused on storytelling about the numbers 1 through 10. I found beautiful number stories on a Grade 1 Waldorf mathematics blog which has supported my work and inspired me to adapt and write some new number stories.
Here I will share a story that I wrote about the number 7: The morning air was cool and there was a strong wind blowing from the ocean up to our cave. The sky was filled with dark clouds. Mum was sitting at the edge of the cave and looking out over the sea. “It looks like a storm is coming”, she said. Suddenly I heard a big crash. BANG! And I ran to mum. “The storm is here she said”, as she hugged me, “that is the sound of thunder. The next thing I knew I heard a ‘pitter, patter, pitter, patter’ that got louder, faster, and stronger as we kept listening. “There’s the rain”, mum said. The sky was getting darker and darker like night. All of a sudden BANG! There was a bright flash of light and then a huge crash! Now there was thunder AND lightning! Pitter, patter, pitter, patter…the rain continued. |
